I created this as a classroom prop to illustrate the point that you can have perfect legibility and still have no readability. In this case unreadability is due to unfamiliarity with the first letter. Called a \"long s,\" forms of this letter were used since the times of the Romans. It began fading from use around the mid-1800s, however examples of its usage could still be found up to nearly 1900.
