Novelty Lettering - Marking Letters

"There were many types of Marking Letters. This version is a variant of the most common form. The complete alphabet may be seen (4th image) within my Calligraphic photo album. Popular in the period from the American Civil War up through WWI, Marking Letters were used principally for titling or attributions. This category of letterforms was also referred to as Card Marking Letters, Box Marking Letters and Bulletin Letters. Marking Letter's principle traits are a simple oval form, executed with pulled strokes, shaded darkest in the lowerportion of the stroke and almost always back-sloping. "
