Pen Grips - 1540-1843

"These views of the pen holds of 20 French & English Writing Masters shows how little variation there was in holding the pen over a span of 300 years. Except for a few minor variations, the standard pen grip was quite consistent for the 400 year period from 1500 through the 20th century.

Due to the advancing technologies of the 20th century, penmanship became less of an important factor in business & commerce. Children were no longer being trained for the antiquated profession of scribe. The technical detail of how one holds a pen or pencil became less critical in the teaching of penmanship leaving this detail to personal preference."
